Coupon

What is a coupon?

Attached to a bond, the coupon represents the interest rate that this bond pays to its holder.

Coupon payments are generally annual, but can be more or less spaced out over time; sometimes coupons are only paid at the time of the bond's redemption, after having been capitalized.

The coupon (expressed as a %) depends on the level of interest rates, it also depends on the bond's lifespan (generally, the longer the bond term, the higher the rate) and on the issuer's quality (the more reliable the issuer, the lower the remuneration).
