Management commentary

Effective date: 30/09/2024Emerging markets (EM) finished the month up by 5.8% (in EUR) and outperformed developed markets (1%). EMEA (1.53%) underperformed the region, as did Latin America (-0.71%). On the Asian side, the performance is 7.13% (EUR).

In September, the MSCI EM surged, significantly outperforming the developed market, driven by several favorable macroeconomic catalysts. The Fed began its easing cycle with a 50 basis point rate cut, which exceeded the market's expectations of a 25 basis point cut. Taking advantage of the Fed's decision, central banks of emerging countries, including China's PBoC, implemented a global monetary easing. Moreover, the September Politburo meeting surprised the market by focusing on key economic issues and urgent policy measures to be taken. The weakening of the US dollar (-0.9%) throughout the month further boosted the stocks of emerging countries. In the 3rd quarter of 2024, the MSCI EM recorded gains of +7.8%, surpassing the MSCI DM by +1.8%.

Emerging market stocks recorded a net outflow of -$19.2bn in 2024.

We note a positive sector effect, particularly a good contribution from consumer discretionary and materials but negative in the communication services and energy sectors. The country effect was also positive, especially with a good contribution from the Netherlands and Hong Kong but negative in China and Poland. We also observe a negative effect from our aggressive factor, with a contribution around -0.50%, and at the same time note a negative effect from our defensive factor showing a contribution of -0.31%. The market capitalization size effect was positive. Over the period under review, we were overweight on the blend factor and underweight on the price momentum factor. At the stock level, we find very good contributors to performance such as Kuaishou Technology Class B (OW, 38.2%), Trip.com Group Ltd. (OW, 31.7%), IMEIK Technology Development Co., Ltd. Class A (OW, 70.8%), Prosus N.V. Class N (OW, 17.1%).
