Management commentary

Effective date: 31/07/2026July 2026 was shaped by the resurgence of hostilities between Iran and the United States. This led Brent crude oil to rally by 22%, peaking at $100 per barrel before easing slightly toward month-end to $89. Bond markets also came under pressure, with US 10-year Treasury yields ending the month at 4.71%.
Against this backdrop, equity markets delivered a mixed performance. The US market was broadly flat, down just 0.1%, while the Euro Stoxx 600 gained 1.2% and the Nikkei fell 8%. The month was marked by a clear sector rotation, with technology underperforming (-4.7%, including -14% for semiconductors) and capital moving toward financials (+5.8%, particularly less cyclical insurers) and more defensive areas such as consumer staples (+1.8%).
Within technology, investor sentiment diverged sharply amid concerns over a potential slowdown in AI-related demand, doubts about profitability, and the ability to finance extremely large investment programs. Microsoft (+23.8%) and Amazon (+13%) reassured the market, while Alphabet (-1%) and Meta (-1.8%) lagged.
In this context, the fund rose by 0.4%, (A share net of fees) compared with a 0.12% decline in the MSCI World, resulting in 50 basis points of outperformance.
In cyclical consumer names, the relative performance benefited from the rebound in our Chinese exposures, which were sought after in July following the weakness in US technology stocks. BYD (+29%) stood out, with export volumes outperforming domestic activity for the first time, while Alibaba (+22%) benefited from progress in Chinese AI.
Among the other positive contributors:
  • the travel segment showed strong resilience, with Booking (+7%) and Royal Caribbean (+7%);
  • Burlington (+16%) benefited from expectations of earnings growth of around 20% per year, supported by improved store productivity, new openings, and broader assortment diversification into categories such as beauty and home;
  • Amazon (+15.7%) was driven by a 37% increase in AWS (cloud activity). Management reassured investors on the strength of underlying demand, supporting higher capital expenditure plans, with AWS orders reaching $496 billion and potential medium-term opportunity estimated at $1 trillion, around five times current levels.
  • Tesla (-26%, underweight in the fund) reported results well below expectations, with operating profit down 57%, particularly in the automotive segment due to the end of US credits and rising competition in China. Higher investment in robotaxis, humanoids, and AI, further increased uncertainty around returns on capital.
Communication services also contributed positively, supported by Spotify (+8%) and Tencent (+8%), the latter benefiting from a rotation out of US technology stocks as well as resilient gaming revenues and WeChat-related services.
The relative performance was negatively impacted by energy, following the rebound in oil prices; financials (underweight positions on insurers (strong performance +6%); and consumer staples, with Danone down nearly 6% as it struggled to benefit from the momentum in the high-protein yogurt segment in the United States.
Portfolio Moves
We took profits in Richemont following very strong results, which are however already reflected in the current valuation, now at an all-time high of 27x forward earnings.
We began reducing our exposure to French equities in anticipation of the negative market perception likely to build ahead of the 2027 elections.
We increased our exposure to Ferrari, whose pricing power and product launch pipeline support growth above the group’s conservative guidance set at its Investor Day in November 2025.
Outlook
We remain disciplined and selective in our thematic consumer exposure, favoring experiences, travel, and premium consumption, while diversifying the portfolio toward other market segments such as financials with exposure to consumer credit.
In a concentrated market still dominated by AI, we remain attentive to valuation risk and interest-rate sensitivity, and continue to favour balance sheet quality and the ability to defend margins.
