Management commentary

Effective date: 31/08/2026August 2026 was marked by concerns over the evolution of long-term rates. The deadlock in negotiations between Iran and the United States, punctuated by episodic attacks, kept oil prices at high levels, continuing to fuel fears of accelerating inflation and thus weighing on the bond markets. Equity markets held up well against the volatility in oil prices, buoyed by renewed strength in the theme of artificial intelligence.

Non-ferrous metals generally performed well in August, following the recovery observed in July. Copper prices set a new record ($14,593/t). Zinc prices reached an annual high ($4,115/t), approaching the peaks seen in December 2006 and March 2022. Nickel prices, however, were weak. While steel prices were well oriented, iron ore prices fell again in August. There was divergence regarding lithium, with a clear recovery in prices in China, contrary to the rest of the world. Gold prices rebounded sharply, rising by almost 10% ($), after nearly reaching $4,700/oz during the month following the announcement by Scott Bessent of a plan to buy back maturities over 10 years for an amount that could approach $1T.

In the absence of developments in the Middle East, oil prices remained relatively stable in August. However, gas prices continued their ascent, rising by 7% to 18% depending on the American, European, or Asian markets, as markets worry about stocks that remain at historically low levels.

Poor summer conditions led to a sharp rise in cereal prices, jumping by 9% to 18% in August. There was no impact, however, on fertilizers, whose prices remained relatively stable in August.

In this environment, the natural resources theme once again posted a significant overall performance, exceeding that of global equities. While the energy and agriculture segments only made modest gains, metals and mining clearly stood out on the upside.

In this context, the fund recorded a distinctly positive performance, exceeding that of its benchmark index. Materials were the main contributor to performance, notably through metals and mining, including diversified miners (Hudbay Minerals, MP Materials, Ivanhoe Mines), copper producers (Ero Copper) and steel producers (Arcelor Mittal), as well as the gold sector. Underexposure to the paper sector was also beneficial. Energy contributed to performance through refining, supported by record margins, and uranium. Underexposure to the agriculture segment was also profitable.

Regarding portfolio management, the main increases concerned the energy sector, through integrated oil companies Chevron Corp, TotalEnergies, and ExxonMobil, and oil services companies Technip Energies, Vallourec, and Saipem. Conversely, profits were taken within metals and mining with reductions in Freeport McMoran, Hudbay Minerals, First Quantum, and Ero Copper among diversified miners, and Gold Fields and Anglogold Ashanti among gold companies.
