Management commentary

Effective date: 30/09/2024Continued rise in gold prices, which increased by +5.4% ($) in September, setting a new record at $2685.58/oz. The decline in the US dollar and real rates once again contributed to this trend, but it is also important to note the renewed interest in the yellow metal through physically backed ETCs, which saw an increase of 15 tonnes over the month, and 89 tonnes since their mid-May low. The same trend is observed in the futures markets with net-buyer open positions at their highest since March 2022.

The gold mining sector also performed well, but with lesser gains than physical gold. Although up significantly by ~29% ($) since the beginning of the year, their performance may seem disappointing relative to that of physical gold, especially since historically, they exhibit a performance leverage of 2/2.5x. This is even more notable as the 12-month profit outlook was again revised upwards by 6.7% in August, and now stands at 58% since the beginning of the year, the highest level since April 2013.

In M&A news, the acquisition of Centamin Plc by Anglogold Ashanti for £1.9 billion was announced.

In this context, the fund's performance has increased, but less than its benchmark index. The top contributors to performance were junior companies Lundin Gold and G Mining, developers Skeena Resources and Artemis Gold, as well as silver producers Aya Gold & Silver and Hecla Mining. Underexposures to Newmont Corp and Royal Gold were also beneficial. However, Orla Mining weighed on performance, and the lack of exposure to Chinese producers Zijin and Zhaojin Mining, to Centamin, and Cia de Minas Buenaventura was detrimental.

Regarding portfolio management, the main reinforcements concerned Endeavour Mining, Westgold Resources, G Mining, and Gold Fields. Conversely, the main reductions involved B2Gold, Franco Nevada, Newmont, Lundin Gold, and Northen Star.
