Management commentary
Effective date: 31/08/2026August 2026 was marked by the rise in long-term rates, fueled by oil volatility, which remained high at $89 for Brent, against a backdrop of deadlock between Iran and the United States. This pressure on inflation weighed on the bond markets, prompting the US Treasury to announce a doubling of long-term bond buybacks. Inflation statistics were mixed: a slowdown in the United States (CPI at 3.4%, core at 2.5%), but an acceleration in the eurozone to 2.9%, driven by energy, with underlying inflation at 2.5%.
Activity indicators remained solid: PMI up in the eurozone, manufacturing and services ISM well oriented in the United States. Conversely, US employment disappointed, despite unemployment at 4.1%. In Japan, unemployment fell to 2.4%, while in China PMIs remained weak.
On the monetary front, Jackson Hole reinforced the hawkish bias: priority to price stability in the United States, possible rate hike in September in the eurozone, and anticipated tightening in Japan.
Equity markets held up well, supported notably by the AI theme. Conversely, interest rates rose, penalizing bond assets.
Our allocation benefited during the month from equity exposure, particularly from diversification into emerging markets and Japan. The same was true for currency exposure, especially the Yen. Rate sensitivity, although moderate, trimmed part of this positive performance.
Our central scenario remains one of resilient global growth and gradual normalization of energy, but with inflation still too high to quickly loosen monetary policies. We remain positive in the medium term on risky assets, while maintaining a tactically cautious approach regarding real rates and valuations.
